Panasonic Introduces Three New Business-Rugged
Toughbook Notebooks with Embedded 3G Wireless, including the T5 Tablet PC -
Reliable, Wireless-Ready Thin-and-Light and Ultraportable Notebook PCs Feature
Panasonic-Engineered Durability, Extremely Long Battery Life and
Industry-Leading Warranty and Support
Panasonic Computer Solutions Company, the leading provider of
durable, reliable wireless mobile PCs, today introduced three new
business-rugged Panasonic(R) Toughbook(R) notebook computers: The ultraportable
CF-W5, tablet alternative CF-T5, and the thin-and-light desktop replacement
CF-Y5.
The three new Panasonic Toughbooks, the next generation of
Panasonic's world-class durable, lightweight notebooks, are engineered and built
by Panasonic for maximum reliability. As with all Toughbooks, designed for field
service or business environments, the new series of notebooks include magnesium
alloy cases, flexible internal connectors and shock-mounted and removable hard
drives. Business-rugged Toughbooks are tested to withstand a one foot drop,
while the hard drives themselves are rated to survive a fall of thirty inches.
Building on its legacy of leadership in integrating wireless
solutions, the new Panasonic Toughbook W5, T5 and Y5 models incorporate a
"wireless-ready" design that allows users to purchase, or upgrade to, embedded
access to next-generation data networks from all major wireless carriers. The
notebooks will ship with optional integrated radio modems to access to the EV-DO
networks of Sprint or Verizon or UMTS/HSDPA-based solutions from Cingular
Wireless.
"Panasonic has a proud heritage of engineering and building
reliable field-mobile notebooks with a variety of wireless options for users in
extreme and mission-critical environments," said Rance Poehler, president,
Panasonic Computer Solutions Company. "However, mobility has become a mainstream
requirement and our business-rugged notebooks are designed with the mobile
professional in mind, offering seamless connectivity in a lightweight and
durable form factor and very long battery life. In addition to protecting core
components of the units and the case itself, users can rest easier knowing that
the hard drives in business-rugged Toughbooks are tested to withstand a drop of
two and a half feet--that's significant data protection in a very lightweight
package."
Added Poehler, "With the introduction of these new products,
Panasonic now offers the widest range of notebooks with embedded wireless
technology available today, providing enterprise and small business users with
the ability to confidently work virtually anywhere."
Toughbook W5: Ultraportable Notebook for the Mobile
Professional
The ultraportable Panasonic Toughbook W5, with its integrated DVD/CD-RW combo
drive, 12.1 inch anti-glare LCD, and weight of just 3.1 pounds, is ideal for
mobile professionals who demand the standard features found in larger notebooks
at a decreased size and weight. Equipped with an ultra-low voltage Intel Core
Solo processor and battery life of more than eight hours, the W5 is as useful on
an airline tray table as it is in the board room.
Toughbook T5: A Tablet PC Alternative with Extremely Long
Battery Life
Unique to the Panasonic Toughbook T5 is a 12.1 inch touch-screen LCD as well as
a durable frame with a sleek, compact design and an ergonomic hand strap.
Equipped with an ultra-low voltage processor, the T5 offers increased battery
capability which translates into more than ten hours of life while weighing only
3.5 pounds. These features, combined with the touch screen and the included
image rotation software, make the T5 ideal for use offsite and in the office.
Toughbook Y5: Desktop Computer Capabilities in an Extremely
Lightweight Package
With a 14.1 inch display, the Panasonic Toughbook Y5 weighs only 3.7 pounds and
boasts six hours of battery life. The Y5 includes a built-in DVD/CD-RW optical
drive, high-speed Intel Core Duo low voltage processor, and multiple wireless
connectivity options. Compared to the W5 and T5, the Y5's larger screen makes it
a lightweight desktop replacement alternative that's suitable for presenting to
small groups. In addition to the magnesium alloy case and shock-mounted hard
drive, the Y5 includes Panasonic's unique "spill-through" keyboard, designed to
reduce the risks of liquid damage.
Meeting the Need for Reliable, Connected Notebooks
With the broad availability of wireless LAN and third generation (3G) data
solutions, users are increasingly dependent on their mobile PCs. Unfortunately,
most notebook vendors fail to deliver dependable products.
According to a June 2006 report by Gartner, Inc., entitled,
"Benchmarking PC Reliability Hardware" authored by Leslie Fiering, "Currently,
notebook AFRs have declined to 15 percent for the first year (in some instances,
considerably lower) with an anticipated 22 percent AFR in the third year."
In its recent (September 2006) annual reader survey, PC
Magazine noted past year failure rates of 23 percent for business notebooks.
By contrast, Panasonic Toughbooks, deployed in a wide range of
mobile environments, boast significantly lower annualized failure rates.
According to Panasonic's internal service records for its entire portfolio of
rugged, semi-rugged and business-rugged notebooks, less than four percent of
Toughbook products, in and out of warranty, require repair.
In addition to hardware reliability, Panasonic has invested
significantly in delivering superior wireless solutions. The company has been
embedding wide area wireless solutions into its notebooks for more than eight
years, and Panasonic was the first manufacturer to ship rugged and semi-rugged
notebooks and tablet PCs with embedded 3G wireless access to UMTS/HSDPA and EV-DO
networks.
Unlike wireless PC cards, which introduce an element of risk
as an external point of loss or failure, integrated wireless solutions are
designed for optimal performance. Like all Panasonic Toughbooks, embedded
wireless solutions from Panasonic are evaluated and tested at Panasonic's own
factories, including benchmark testing in one of the most advanced
electromagnetic interference test chambers in the world.
Superior Warranty and Support
Every Panasonic Toughbook is sold with a standard three-year limited warranty
and access to 24/7/365 U.S.-based phone support for the entire life of the
product. The company boasts an average call center hold time of less than one
minute. In addition, in the unlikely event of a hardware-related failure,
Panasonic covers the cost of overnight shipping to and from its national service
center. The average turnaround time for repairs is under two days. Panasonic
also offers a full range of professional services to support enterprise
customers before and after deployment.
Pricing and Availability
The Panasonic Toughbook W5 and T5 will be available in October 2006 at a
suggested "wireless ready" retail price of $1,899. Available in December 2006,
the Toughbook Y5 will be available at a suggested retail price of $2,199. All
units are available through authorized Panasonic Toughbook resellers nationwide.

Handy PCs for note-taking
The importance of note taking could not be emphasised better.
While reporters at Connect 2006 - a conference and exhibition on the information
technology and communication sectors organised by the Confederation of Indian
Industry - were seen with paper notepads, a few stalls at the venue had PCs and
laptops, specially supporting note-taking capability.
The Hewlett Packard stall featured the recently launched Tablet PC.
The 1.8 kg tablet comes with a dual core processor and can be connected to
notebook accessories like memory devices, wireless support, communications
devices and other computer peripherals.
Toshiba tablet PC
Test-drive needed — it's not for everyone
I read somewhere that the reason we use QWERTY
keyboards is that the inventor of the typewriter wanted to prevent users from
typing too fast and jamming his new machine. So while other key combinations
might make us more efficient, we've been stuck with the QWERTY layout for more
than 100 years.
I was thinking about how we often design new machines to match old ways of doing
things while I was test-driving one of Toshiba's new tablet PCs. A tablet
computer is like a standard laptop, except you can scribble notes and diagrams
on the screen with a pen-sized stylus.

Apex - It's Not Just Sketching Anymore; Apex
Unveils New Generation Products
Apex Software, the standard in sketching in the real estate appraisal
market, unveiled today new products and services -- its fourth generation
desktop software, Medina, its companion fourth generation mobility product,
named Nexus, and an annual maintenance program to support them. The announcement
was made in conjunction with its new product website.
Medina offers a simpler user interface, more flexible licensing options, and
numerous usability features. It does not, however, contain any changes to its
core integration code.
"Our customers have come to expect innovative product releases. We've
delivered," stated Robert Smoote, Apex Software's Vice President of Product
Management. "But they also count on us to ensure smooth integration with other
appraisal packages. Medina uses the exact same integration tools as our previous
version and is designed to be a drop-in replacement for integration with their
other software."
Medina not only addresses many of the major desires of current users, but is
also a link to Nexus, an appraisal field solution that runs on Ultra Mobile PCs
and Tablet PCs.
"Nexus will take our customers to the next level of field appraising. Its
revolutionary design to address work flow, sketching and data gathering renders
the use of pencil and paper obsolete," adds Smoote. "Couple that with our coming
GIS capabilities and the mobile devices available today and our users have the
perfect field solution. Nexus is truly revolutionary and will have a huge impact
on the mobile industry."
"Additionally, our new maintenance program provides more than live technical
support, unlike most companies. It also puts our customers on track to receive
discounts for our Continuing Education Seminars, Training and other value added
services such as free updates and versions to the software they purchase and a
free Webinar.
Medina will be released in November of this year to the fee appraisal market.
Nexus will be released to Australian valuers in September, to the U.S. mass
appraisal market in October, and to the fee appraiser market in January. To view
the new site and watch multi-media videos of the products in action, visit

Einstein Technologies announced today the release of Tablet
Enhancements for Outlook 3.0
TEO 3.0, the long-awaited add-in for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and
2007. TEO provides a tightly integrated pen-enabled experience for
Tablet PC and UMPC users on the Microsoft Office platform. A full
feature listing, pricing, and trial version can be found at
www.tabletoutlook.com.
TEO 3.0 allows users of Microsoft Outlook to maximize their tablet time
by replacing the standard Microsoft Outlook forms for appointments,
contacts, tasks, and journal entries with ink-aware forms that retain
the look and feel of Microsoft Outlook without requiring synchronization
or separate applications.
The new version 3.0 greatly improves handwriting recognition accuracy
and note-taking features; allowing users to mix handwriting, text,
images, and shapes in any Microsoft Outlook item. Integrated audio
recording allows meetings, conference calls, or personal voice notes to
be recorded and played back in notes. Support for MapPoint 2004 and 2006
provides integrated maps and directions on contacts and tasks. Skype
integration provides incoming and outgoing call notification, contact
lookup, call notes scratch pad, and call logging to the Outlook Journal.
"Einstein Technologies has delivered an innovative product which
clearly demonstrates how Tablet and Touch Technology can increase the
productivity of mobile professionals without sacrificing the
functionality of their existing applications," said Mika Krammer,
Director of Windows Client Mobility at Microsoft Corp.
"TEO's obvious advantage is that it adds significant functionality to
an application which has become the de facto standard for personal and
enterprise information management. We have improved upon a
well-established software program rather than requiring users to learn a
new one with fewer features," said Josh Einstein, President and Owner of
Einstein Technologies.
About Einstein Technologies
Einstein Technologies is a New Jersey Limited Liability Company and
Microsoft software partner that specializes in Tablet PC and
telecommunications software for the Microsoft Windows platform. Josh

helpful, or just a gimmick? My answer is floppier than Gumby in a
microwave: Tablet PCs are a needed and handy new technology, but certain
aspects need improvement.
Pitched as standard laptops with super powers, when trouble threatens,
they step into a phone booth, then leap out looking like an expensive
pad of paper. Luckily, this $1,500 pad of paper comes with impressive
benefits.
Caseworker chosen to test new Tablet PC
New technology soon available to CPS caseworkers will cut out stacks of
paperwork and hours of travel time, allowing them to devote more energy to
tackling child abuse and neglect cases in the Coastal Bend.
A few months ago, local Child Protective Services caseworker Adrian Monjaras
would stay organized by devoting one legal notepad for each case he
investigated. The stack of pads quickly grew, and he struggled to keep track.

Putting pen to screen - Tablet PCs share notes, reduce paper and
lighten backpacks
When St. Ursula Academy freshmen started classes last week, they carried a tool
that will change the way they learn.
All 175 freshmen are working on tablet PC computers, which have pen-based
technology. Students will have little or no need for paper, pens and pencils.
Textbooks will be online, too.
"I love it," said Maria Duffy, 15, of Eastgate. "It's going to be way lighter
than the books. I used to carry around a ton of books."
The One-to-One Tablet PC Program will be phased in with each freshman class, so
eventually all students will work with tablet PCs.
"We were always poised to do a one-to-one program," said Kim Henninger, St.
Ursula's director of technology. "When the tablet PC became available, which is
the pen-based technology where you can turn on the screen and write, it just
became a no-brainer."August 18, 2006

Back to School, With Cellphone and Laptop
It used to be that getting ready for
another school year meant buying a few new No. 2
pencils, spiral notebooks and a lunchbox. Not anymore.
Young children and teenagers, as well as college
students, are going to school with more electronic
gadgets than ever.
“Tech-based products are so much less
expensive that the price point now allows kids to nag
their parents to buy a particular product or buy one
themselves,” said Peter Grunwald, president of Grunwald
Associates, a consulting firm in Bethesda, Md., focusing
on school technology.
As a result, the back-to-school season is one of the
busiest for electronic retailers like Circuit City or
Best Buy, rivaling only Christmas. “Purchases are more
necessity-based at this time of year,” said Stephanie
Gooch, product process manager for Best Buy. At
Christmas, purchases “tend to be more gaming,
entertainment-based,” she said.
Another change is that the newest tech devices are not
aimed at just older students anymore. While laptops are
still most useful for those going off to college, Mr.
Grunwald says that as prices drop on a wide variety of
products once meant for an older crowd, younger students
start using them as well. “Kids are aging up,” he
said...
...College
“You can’t go to college without a computer, and anymore
that means a laptop,” said Ms. Gooch, the Best Buy
manager.
Among the popular options this year are laptops that
flip around to turn into tablet PC’s, like the Gateway
CX210X convertible notebook ($1,299). The stylus that
comes with the laptop can be used like a pen. For those
unfamiliar with tablet PC’s it can take a little time to
become comfortable with the smooth display, however, and
the screen is sometimes difficult to see under certain
lighting conditions. But the laptop could prove to be a
big timesaver for students putting together study
guides. For example, students could download a
professor’s lecture notes to the laptop, write their own
notes in the margins using the tablet PC, then print out
a set to study.

Tablet PC Based In-Car PC System
Bitportersmedia has an ambitious coding project in the works to turn a Tablet PC
into an in-car PC/Navigation system. The project, named DRADIS (Battlestar
Galactica fans might recognize the moniker), aims to aid drivers "with their
work tasks while driving" which is a little scary until you read that
interaction is based on speech recognition and synthesis. The software makes
heavy use of the Tablet PC API and provides navigation, video, and live RSS
feeds.

Nuance Introduces Dragon NaturallySpeaking Legal 9 -
Advanced Speech Recognition Boosts Productivity, Eliminates Manual Transcription
- Leading Speech Recognition Solution Supplants
Traditional Legal Transcription Services to Significantly Reduce Overhead,
Increase Productivity; New Release Boasts Dramatic Accuracy Gains and
Elimination of Voice Training
Nuance Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: NUAN), a leading provider of speech
and imaging solutions, today introduced Dragon(TM) NaturallySpeaking(R) Legal
version 9, a new release of the world's most accurate speech recognition
solution designed specifically for legal professionals in large firms, small
practices, or corporate and government legal departments. Already in use by
thousands of legal professionals worldwide, Dragon NaturallySpeaking Legal
converts speech into text at up to 160 words per minute, reducing or eliminating
the costs associated with manually creating documents and transcripts and
increasing productivity.
The new release of Dragon NaturallySpeaking Legal boosts accuracy by as much 20
percent, moving accuracy levels up to 99 percent, and also removes one of the
most significant issues that has typically created resistance to trying speech
recognition - "training" or "enrollment." Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 is the
first-ever desktop speech recognition product to eliminate this up-front
training while still delivering highly accurate results. Also new in this
release is enhanced network support which allows users to access Dragon
NaturallySpeaking Legal from any workstation on an organization's LAN, even
thin-client Citrix terminals, making it equally well-suited for small practices
and large firms.
Dragon NaturallySpeaking Legal 9 adds speech to virtually all Microsoft Windows
applications, including most practice management systems, as well as Microsoft
Office, Corel WordPerfect and Lotus Notes. By using Dragon NaturallySpeaking
Legal 9, legal professionals can create contracts, briefs, e-mails and letters
over three times faster than typing. Legal professionals that use manual
transcription services from support staff or third party service agencies can
eliminate the time and expense associated with that process. In both cases,
Dragon NaturallySpeaking Legal 9 improves client service through faster document
turnaround.
A Breakthrough in Speech Recognition
Dragon NaturallySpeaking Legal 9 makes speech recognition even better for small
practices or large firms with a number of new features and improvements:
Key Benefits
-- Most Accurate Ever - Significant improvements to the Dragon NaturallySpeaking
recognition system have yielded an accuracy improvement of up to 20 percent over
the previous release, and nearly 40 percent over version 7 - resulting in speech
recognition accuracy levels as high as 99 percent.
-- First to Eliminate Training - Dragon NaturallySpeaking Legal 9 is the first
desktop speech recognition solution to truly remove the need to "train" the
software - and still deliver accurate results.
-- Enterprise Features - Dragon NaturallySpeaking Legal 9 can be accessed from
anywhere on a network, even thin client Citrix terminals. Improved tools allow
IT administrators to easily manage network deployments of Dragon
NaturallySpeaking Legal 9.
-- Optimized for Legal Environments - Dragon NaturallySpeaking Legal 9 provides
seamless speech input and control capabilities with practice management systems
and the most popular applications. Simply install Dragon NaturallySpeaking Legal
9 and you have added speech input and control to your practice management system
and to virtually all of your Microsoft Windows applications. The new release
includes specific integration with Microsoft Office, Outlook and Internet
Explorer, as well as Corel WordPerfect and Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird.
-- Custom Vocabularies - With a specialized legal vocabulary of more than 25,000
legal terms, and powerful tools to further customize vocabularies, Dragon
NaturallySpeaking Legal 9 ensures the highest levels of accuracy in legal
environments. Dragon NaturallySpeaking Legal 9 also automatically formats legal
citations.
-- New Mobility, Portability - New support for Nuance-approved Bluetooth
headsets gives users the freedom to dictate wirelessly, without being tethered
to a PC. In addition, users can capture dictation with mobile devices such as
digital recorders and Palm Tungsten for automatic transcription by Dragon
NaturallySpeaking Legal when synched with the PC. Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9
Legal also supports the Tablet PC.
"For years the Legal industry has relied on speech recognition to drive down
manual transcription costs and increase productivity, particularly as the
adoption of practice management systems has grown," said John Shagoury,
president, Productivity Applications Division, Nuance. "The accuracy
improvements, elimination of voice training, and the additional network support
that we have achieved with Dragon NaturallySpeaking Legal 9 make it the obvious
choice for legal professionals in large firms, small practices, or corporate and
government legal departments to reduce costs, minimize document turnaround time,
and improve overall client service."
The latest release of Dragon NaturallySpeaking comes from the world's expert in
speech recognition - Nuance. Nuance speech technology touches millions of people
every day as they interact with their bank or airline reservation system by
voice, dial by voice from their cell phone, or interact with their car's
navigation system.
Availability
Dragon NaturallySpeaking Legal 9 is available immediately through Nuance's
professional sales organization and global network of value added reseller
partners. The suggested retail price is $1199 for individual users, with

Microsoft Tablet MVP and ZDNet Blogger Marc Orchant Joins
Foldera as CEO of ClassFolders; Popular ZDNet Blogger and Software Executive to
Launch First Vertical Market Adaptation of Foldera for Education
Foldera(TM), Inc. (OTCBB:FDRA), the Next Generation Information Organizer
and Messaging/Collaboration service, has announced the appointment of software
industry veteran and well-known blogger Marc Orchant to the position of
ClassFolders' CEO-in-Residence.
Echoing a theme started by Dave Madison, the ex-Microsoft Senior Manager (NASDAQ:MSFT)
who just joined Foldera, Marc Orchant, is the latest Foldera senior executive
who will take the helm at Foldera's ClassFolders' vertical. Mr. Orchant went on
record as saying, "People were surprised to hear that I'd joined Foldera,
particularly as I'm right in the middle of writing a book about Microsoft
Outlook 2007. However, I'm a true fanatic when it comes to personal productivity
and team collaboration. When I saw Foldera, I realized that I didn't want to
miss being a part of a company that is creating an entirely new paradigm in the
organization and collaboration space. To quote Dave Madison: `Foldera changes
everything,'" said Mr. Orchant.
Richard Lusk, Founder and CEO of Foldera, stated: "I can't tell you how pleased
I am to have attracted a talent like Marc Orchant to our team. His depth of
understanding of the educational space coupled with his years of experience
designing and marketing sophisticated software make him a natural to head up
ClassFolders. His credibility as a true authority on productivity is
unquestionable and will be invaluable in helping Foldera fine tune the
application for even the most discriminating of productivity mavens."
"Developing ClassFolders on top of the Foldera Organizer and
Messaging/Collaboration suite as a platform is an exciting opportunity for two
reasons. First, ClassFolders will be built to meet the needs of students,
parents, and educators by allowing ease of communication and collaboration among
all these three groups in a way that has not been possible in the past. Second,
ClassFolders will be the first of several vertical applications we are intending
to develop using our core code base," said Mr. Orchant.
"I've been working closely with Oliver Starr, Foldera's Chief Mobility Officer,
to create a framework for ClassFolders that incorporates the social networking
capabilities that are popular with students right now, like FaceBook and MySpace
have done. We recognize how important it is to make ClassFolders accessible from
a cell phone or other small, mobile devices. We're looking at ways to
incorporate SMS text messaging, chat, and photo and music playlist sharing for
our ClassFolders users," Mr. Orchant added.
About Marc Orchant
For the past five years, Mr. Orchant has been co-chair of the Workforce
Education Alliance (WEA), a partnership between the IT industry, educators, and
government in New Mexico that promotes the integration of information technology
skills development into the curriculum of public schools. WEA has also been a
champion of small learning communities and the career pathways model to assist
high school students in making informed choices about post-secondary education
programs and career opportunities in a number of fields, including information
technology, healthcare, and digital media. Mr. Orchant also serves on the board
of the New Mexico Information Technology and Software Association, the
organization under which WEA was organized and operates.
Prior to joining the editorial team at ZDNet, one of the most heavily trafficked
technology portals on the internet, Mr. Orchant wrote three blogs for Weblogs,
Inc., a blog network purchased by AOL last year. He is a Microsoft Most Valuable

StudentBackup.com Launches Hassle Free Computer Back Up
Software For Students
“If you’re connected, you’re protected,” according to
Maggie Tolkin and Amy Motschwiller, creators of StudentBackup.com. These
innovative women have introduced an easy to install and easy to use software
package that provides students a fast, reliable and convenient way for backing
up their important computer files. According to a survey conducted at the
Cornell University Johnson School of Business while students experienced
significant computer failures, 70% of them never backed up their files. Having
no luck finding a service that would back up student files, Maggie and Amy
designed an innovative software package to fill the void. StudentBackup.com is
now available as an inexpensive insurance policy for students who fear the loss
of their critical work due to unimaginable computer disasters.
“With college students of our own, we discovered that there was no product on
the market that was cost effective and easy to use. Our product protects
information daily and provides students and their parent’s peace of mind that
their information is safe and can be restored should disaster strike.
Unfortunately we know from our research that disaster, in some form, will strike
anyone who uses a PC or Laptop,” said Amy Motschwiller, co-founder of
StudentBackup.com.
The proprietary software connects securely with the student’s computer through
the Internet. StudentBackup.com automatically selects and backs up essential
data files to an external safe and secure location. After each daily back up the
students receive confirmation via e-mail of their successful backup.
Should a computer be lost, stolen, destroyed or malfunction, restoring
information to a new computer is simple and secure, 24/7/365. All information is
encrypted and the student alone, with an assigned password and key, can retrieve
it readily.
Files containing personal identification or financial information are safe from
identify theft and illegal use. StudentBackup.com uses powerful encryption
software to protect data from hackers. To learn more about this innovative
software and useful student computer care tips, please visit StudentBackup.com.

However, the biggest hurdle to this growth could come from the Tablet PC's main
backer, Microsoft Corp., if that company decides it is serious in promoting a
new lower-priced, consumer-oriented product category, In-Stat said.
The Tablet PC market is due to grow from US$1.2 billion in 2004 to $5.4 billion
in 2009, with the U.S. remaining the biggest market followed by Europe then
Asia, according to Brian O'Rourke, a senior analyst at the company. In-Stat
classifies Tablet PCs as devices that run the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
operating system.
To date, Tablet PCs have been more expensive than notebook PCs and used mainly
in vertical markets such as health care, real estate and insurance, O'Rourke
said.
But there signs that companies outside of these specialist markets are beginning
to purchase the machines for use by middle managers. One of the main reasons for
the growing, if still limited popularity, of these devices is falling prices.
Average prices for Tablet PCs have dropped well below $2,000 this year, he said.
O'Rourke declined to reveal In-Stat's forecast for unit shipments.
In-Stat's findings come after Microsoft signalled several times that it is still
committed to the Tablet PC more than three and a half years after Bill Gates,
the company's chairman and chief software architect, predicted that they would
become the most popular form of PCs sold in the U.S.
In January, Microsoft said it was working with PC vendors to push Tablet PC
prices to within $100 to $200 of comparable notebooks and, in June, Gates
reaffirmed that the company continued to invest in software improvements to help
push Tablet PCs into the mainstream.
If Microsoft combines its Tablet PC operating system with the new Windows Vista
operating system, formerly known as Longhorn, this could help push Tablet PCs
into the mainstream, O'Rourke said. Windows Vista is due in 2006.
But Microsoft could quite easily kill off the Tablet PC market, too, he said.
In April, at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference, Gates announced that
he was considering pushing a potential rival portable computing platform into
the market called Ultra Mobile 2007.
In remarks posted on Microsoft's web site, Gates said he envisioned Ultra Mobile
2007 as a new category of device that would cost between $800 and $1,000, and
weigh as near to a pound as possible. These devices would have a consumer
friendly bent and would integrate a camera, a phone, a touch-screen, and offer
music and video playback functions along with very long battery life.
"The Ultra Mobile 2007 adds another portable PC platform to the market. If it
coexists with Tablet PCs, it could detrimentally affect sales of Tablet PCs.
Microsoft may intend the Ultra Mobile 2007 to succeed or even replace the Tablet
PC," O'Rourke said.
While growth prospects for the Tablet PC look rosier, the devices remain a small
slice of the overall market. Tablet PCs will not account for more than 5 percent
of the notebook PC market through 2009, he said.

ARINC Introduces eFlyBook(TM) for General Aviation: The
World's First e-paper Based Electronic Document Device for Charts and Documents
Editor's Note: Although this isn't a Tablet PC, we have a lot of readers
who are in the aviation industry. This is posted for their benefit.
Smart Multimedia Gallery
New Document Display for Pilots--ARINC Incorporated has introduced the ARINC
eFlyBook(TM), a portable chart display and document library for General Aviation
pilots. With charts and data from MyAirplane.com the glare-free "electronic
paper" display is clearly legible under all cockpit lighting conditions.
ARINC Incorporated today introduced a breakthrough in display
technology that facilitates the use of electronic documents in the general
aviation cockpit. ARINC eFlyBook(TM) is a self-powered electronic library that
stores and displays enroute charts and other essential documents on a glare-free
screen of "electronic paper."
eFlyBook stores all of the digitized US terminal procedures, enroute charts, the
complete airport facility directory and FAR/AIM documents--with room to spare
for user-installed documents. Unlike laptop screens, the eFlyBook display
remains sharp, clear, and legible under all cockpit lighting--even direct
sunlight. Based on new "persistent display" technology, the screen requires very
little power and no backlighting. The display can run during long hours of
flight over several days on a single charge.
ARINC demonstrated eFlyBook this week to thousands of aircraft owners and pilots
at the world's largest general aviation venue--AirVenture 2006, in Oshkosh,
Wisconsin.
eFlyBook combines two revolutionary technologies: award-winning chart viewing
and compression software developed by MyAirplane.com, and the slim, portable "iLiad"
eReader developed and manufactured by iRex Technologies of the Netherlands, a
spin-off of Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands.
"ARINC eFlyBook finally delivers on the promise of electronic documents for the
pilot. It far exceeds the usability of laptops, tablet computers, or PDAs,
whether in the cockpit or elsewhere--it is actually usable under real flight
conditions," stated Rolf Stefani, Senior Director of the ARINC Technology
Innovation Center, who is himself a private pilot. "With eFlyBook, FAA enroute
charts and other documents become easy to store and locate, easy to interact
with and update. And the screen makes them as easy to read as regular paper
documents, even in direct sun. Pilots have to see it to believe it."
The pencil-thin eFlyBook is smaller, lighter and less expensive than
conventional laptops and tablet PC's used in cockpits today. It features easily
accessible memory for user-installed documents in multiple formats via a PC-USB
connection. It also provides for the use of SD, CF and USB memory cards and
devices. A simple and intuitive stylus-based screen interface retrieves and
displays documents easily. The "electronic paper" screen also captures and
stores handwritten notes from pilots using the stylus.
The portable eFlyBook unit measures about 1/2 x 6 x 9 inches, and is priced
below $1100 including a 12-month digital subscription to FAA enroute charts,
digital copies of the complete US terminal procedures, the US airport facility
directory, and FAR/AIM documents. A travel docking station and charger are
included.
"eFlyBook is a paradigm shift in display technology for the cockpit," continued
Stefani. "Its legibility and ease of use are unmatched. We fully expect eFlyBook
to become standard equipment for the majority of general aviation operators."

Intel Announces Management Changes
Intel Corporation today announced that it is making a number of senior
management changes focused on improving the company's structure and achieving
faster and better decision making. The company also announced that two senior
executives will be retiring.
"As part of the thorough analysis of Intel begun in April, we have examined the
focus and structure of our top management level, including our use of
'two-in-a-box' co-managers," said Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini. "The
moves announced today will help us speed decision making and bring new resources
to bear in critical areas, while allowing me to spend more time on key strategic
issues."
The management changes include:
Intel's Sales and Marketing Group will be led by Executive Vice President Sean
Maloney, 50, who previously co-managed the company's Mobility Group. Maloney
will also become Intel's chief sales and marketing officer. Donald MacDonald,
who was previously vice president and general manager of the Digital Home Group,
will become vice president of Marketing and Brands, reporting to Maloney.
Senior Vice President David Perlmutter, 53, will continue as general manager of
the Mobility Group. Senior Vice President Anand Chandrasekher, 43, formerly
co-general manager of the Sales and Marketing Group, will manage a newly created
business unit focused on low power Intel Architecture products and the
ultra-mobile PC market. He will report to Perlmutter.
Eric Kim, 51, senior vice president, who previously co-managed the Sales and
Marketing Group, will become general manager of the Digital Home Group.
William Siu, a 26-year Intel veteran who served as vice president and general
manager of the Channel Platforms Group, and Richard Wirt, who has 25 years of
service and is vice president, senior fellow and co-general manager of the
Software and Solutions Group, announced their retirements. Both of these
executives will remain full time with Intel through the end of the year to best
manage their organizations' transitions. With the impending retirement of Siu,
the Channel Platforms Group will report to Maloney in the Sales and Marketing
Group. A general manager for the Channel Platforms Group will be named at a
later date.
Renee James, vice president and co-general manager of the Software and Solutions
Group, will continue to manage the group following Wirt's retirement at the end
of the year.
"I want to express my deep appreciation to Bill Siu and Richard Wirt for their
numerous contributions and dedicated service to Intel over many years,"
continued Otellini. "We thank them very much and wish them all the best in their
retirement."
